Marmaris' surprise call from Costa Concordia 16/1/2009
Turkey’s Marmaris Cruise Port had an unexpected call yesterday from Costa
Concordia at its 305mtr long berth. Due to adverse weather conditions, the ship
was unable to dock in Rhodes and therefore diverted to nearby Marmaris.
‘Marmaris receives such surprise calls every year from winter cruise ships in
the area, owing to its naturally sheltered harbour with lack of obstacles, (such
as break waves or other nearby coastal developments), around the piers, making
it easy to berth here even in bad weather,’ reports Amanda Çetin, the
destination’s marketing manager.
This maiden call follows 11 first-time visits recorded in 2008 including three
MSC Cruises ships, The World, Carnival Splendor and Carnival Freedom. MSC Poesia
made her maiden call to Marmaris in early December and returned again on
Christmas Day.
Costa Concordia's master was presented with a hand-painted, traditional Turkish
ceramic plate to mark the inaugural visit.
